CHAPTER 17

"It wasn't a completely wasted trip," I observed around a mouthful of my lobster roll. "When's the last time we had dinner together outside of the shop?"

When Hazel failed to respond, I looked to Rune for a reaction, but he was too absorbed in his food to pay attention. He had remarked before that lobster rolls weren't a thing during his time in Ireland before being cursed by a fairy a couple of centuries ago. His failure to reply now came as no shock, but I felt obligated to try.

"We're supposed to have nice weather for the parade tomorrow," I tried again. Crickets. Not ready to give up my attempt to make conversation with the two people who meant more to me than anyone else in the world, I asked, "At least we don't have to dress as blueberries again, right?"

"Yeah, sure. Let's go with that, "Hazel said with a sigh. Although half of her meal remained on her plate, she wrinkled her nose and said, "I'm ready whenever you guys are. "

"Hazel, what's going on? You're not yourself at all. I would wait until after the festival to ask, but considering how you've acted tonight, but I just can't wait longer. What is it?"

She lifted one shoulder and let it drop. "It's nothing. I'm fine. Just having an off day."

It was not "nothing," and my sister-from-another-mister was far from okay. I grabbed the van keys from the middle of the table with lightning speed. "We're not leaving until you tell me."

"Fine. Did you check our reviews on the Reel Life app today?"

"No? Why?" I asked while digging my phone from my pocket. Once it was in my hand, I opened the app and pulled up our reviews. What I saw made my blood boil. "A one-star from Mandy Leigh? When did she even come into the shop?"

"Remember, lass? ‘Twas the first day of the festival.”

"Ugh! This one-star review is just one more example of Mandy Leigh's evilness," Hazel reassured. “The woman has a bad habit of confronting people and stirring trouble online. When she’s face-to-face with you, it’s all smiles and fake niceness.”

As Hazel explained Mandy Leigh to Rune, I continued reading. And the more I read, the tighter I gripped my phone. "Listen to this. She says we have so many dust bunnies that we should have to register them with animal control, and the health department should check for rodents. According to her account, the store isn't well-lit, and that the prices are unfair."

"Mandy Leigh has given low reviews to everyone. Did you read the one for Mocha Joe's? She said the latte she ordered gave her diarrhea."

"Mocha Joe's has the best coffee in the world. I bet she's probably lactose intolerant and ordered it full-foam with whole milk or something. Oh, and check out Warren’s. She left him half a star and said—"

Hazel reached her hand toward me, palm up. "Okay, stop, please. It's getting late, and we're all tired. Let's get home."

"Yeah, okay." I handed over the keys without argument.
